Wade McNary, the inventor of the amazing Mongo Bat, created this commercial in his efforts to sell the Mongo Bat to Mattel. He was successful, and Mattel went on to manufacture a half million Mongo Bats in the mid-1990's. Enjoy!
Mattels Mongo Bat Commercial
Wade McNary, the inventor of the beloved Mongo Bat, dug deep into his archives and found the following commercial, which was aired during Saturday morning cartoons. Makes me want to go play with my Mongo Bat!
Bring The Bat Back!
I just played my first game of Mongo ball with my daughter. It brings back many memories of days gone by, having big Mongo games in the back yard, the extended family acting like a bunch of kids. Sadly, though, as you can see in the linked video, the last known remaining Mongo bat is broken and patched with duct tape. The current generation may never know the thrill that is Mongo. It's time to bring the bat back for a new generation!
Mongo Memories
quietxcoastline (http://quietxcoastline.livejournal.com/) has this memory about the Mongo Bat:
Back in the day, my block used to be pretty awesome. All the neighborhood kids would play outside until midnight (which was really late back then) & get together to play games such as MONGO BAT
Gargunkle Blog Has Mongo Bat Page
If you've ever Googled "Mongo Bat" you've surely found I scarfed a few of his images since they appear to be the only ones on the Internet and ther's no telling how long Gargunkle will keep this site up. It has not been updated in over a year. Here are the images:
APB - Looking for a Mongo Bat
Does anyone out there still have a Mongo Bat?
Jerry put an ad on Craigslist Charlotte looking for one but has had no response. I wonder if there is someone hoarding them somewhere? I for one had one in my attic until very recently. It was cracked and duct-taped. Nonetheless we pulled it out and played and it was A BLAST!
Maybe we should post an ad on all Craiglists all over the USA.
Mattel Claims No Record of Mongo Bat
We inquired with Mattel's legal department looking for any remnants of the Mongo Bat. Here's the response we got from Mattel.
Your email was forwarded to me as I handle permission requests that the company receives.
I have looked online and in all our databases and cannot find a listing for a Mongo bat.
Are there any markings on the bat? A copyright notice or something in the mold of the plastic?
Hi Jerry,
People Want the Mongo Bat!
Jerry posted an inquiry about the Mongo Bat on the Ask Dr. Toy Website and here are highlights from one of the responses he got:
Mr Maslar, please let me know if you ever come across one of these. I have been searching since last summer and have pretty much given up. I was trying to locate one for a close friend of mine who speaks very sentimentally about the “Mongo Bat”. My friend is a Baptist preacher who led a youth group many years ago, and he often tells me what good times they all had playing ball with the Mongo Bat.
